Anime / Manga

edited August 2009 in General Discussion
Well I managed to get into anime like 6 months ago when I was playing Perfect World (Free MMORPG) and the Guild Leader was interested in it himself and got me into it. Since then I've been loving it.

What Anime / Manga do you guys watch? Oh yeah, those who don't watch it try it, it'll be a entertaining past-time and its much better then the stereotypical Pokémon and kiddy view most people seem to have about it. It is aimed at all ages - from under 10 to like 12-16 or 16+ and all genres like Comedy, Action, Supernarutal, Horror, Romance etc. I seriously recommend it for everyone. You can watch it off Youtube or other sites like http://www.animeseason.com/anime-list/ratings/

Well I've watched:
- Bleach
- Naruto
- Death Note
- Code Geass (Process)
- Cowboy Bebop
- Full Metal Panic (Process)

I Recommend:
- Bleach (Supernarutal, Comedy, Action etc.)
- Death Note (Investigative, Supernatural)
- Code Geass (Mecha, Supernatural, Action)

I'm currently not into Manga as much as Anime but you can get it from many places such as http://www.mangafox.com/. Manga are comic form of anime and they are further then the anime series, often 10 episodes or so. Fillers are there in animes when the Anime becomes too close in storyline to the Manga. Some like it also because they prefer reading.

For more recommendations I suggest: http://www.anime-eden.com/forums/sho...=2057&page=205

For good downloader off youtube I suggest VDownloader (Google it)

What about you guys?
What do you guys recommend?

  • Well not anymore, I got to lv 53 on PWUK, would be around lv 35 in the PWi (PWUK lv rate is 2x faster). I didn't get bored of it, I just replaced it with WoW, if I didn't have WoW, I would happily play perfect world amongst other games 24/7
  • Well, I personally think anime is much better then cartoons because they have deep storylines, have multiple genres and are aimed mainly at more at older people
  • personally i hope all anime freaks get drafted and killed in the next world war, but stuff like venture bros is pretty good

    :D
  • I grew out of anime. One day you will too.

You need to stop watching gay 2000 episode long fighting series with never ending plots

    also
Well, I personally think anime is much better then cartoons because they have deep storylines, have multiple genres and are aimed mainly at more at older people
this is a common misconception, most anime is aimed at early and late teenagers (everything on your list), the 'mature' series you see (most which you probably wouldn't care to watch) are aimed at 20-something NEETS who live alone in their parents basement yo
  • Gun Sword.
  • Trigun
    Full Metal Alchemist
  • personally i hope all anime freaks get drafted and killed in the next world war
    I fixed your post.
  • Over here, we call them "Narutards".
  • Over here, nobody in my secondary school doesn't seem to be into anime / manga at all. ALways, Xbox Live, Xbox 360, Xbox 360....

"Do you know what anime is? ...."
    "No, whats that"
    "%£$$£$%"

Probably only a few know about what anime is, probably more but they keep quiet.

Otherwise I heard people on forums nickname them "Otakus" (Whatever that is).
  • Trigun
    Full Metal Alchemist
That used to watch alot. Maybe I should start again.
Stuff like Yu Yu Hakasho Inuyasha and DBZ. Cartoons rockin too!
  • DBZ
    Yes.

    I recommend GundamWing.
  • I heard a lot about gundam, I may start that in the near future, is it like full metal panic?

    I recommend GundamWing.

...Just what you'd expect from someone like Demoncard.

I heard a lot about gundam, I may start that in the near future, is it like full metal panic?
Generic Gundam series formula: Wanton angsty teenager accidentally stumbles over/steals giant robot, is recruited as pilot for X organization because of plot excuse Y. Over the course of series we learn that there are no real good good guys, only people, and that people are assholes (of varying sizes), and that war is bad and it sucks but because people are shitty and suck we have war. THE END. Oh, and there's giant robots, and people (sometimes)die.

The best traditional Gundam is probably Z-Gundam, but for that you should really watch the original series first, which OTOH is terribly dated both visually and animation wise if you're used to modern series. If you can put with it I think it's worth the ride. There's a 3-movie compilation set of the original series that kinda covers most it pretty well though leaves out a lot of characterization but overall is a good alternative to the alternative the whole series which is full of a lot of retarded crap (which was cut in the movies)
There's also a 3-movie set of Z-gundam but you don't want to watch those as they compress just way too much (and are half an hour shorter compared to the original series' movies, and the original series was 10 episodes shorter than Z to begin with) for things to make much sense unless you know what's going on already. The ending is also different from the original TV-series, and you don't want to see the movie ending.

Anyway, the best Gundam is actually Turn-A Gundam, but it's pretty different from the usual fare (less focus on robots and fighting, more focus on tea-drinking-diplomacy and characters), so if you just want Giant Robot porn you should probably ignore it, especially as the titular mustached mecha has a rather hilarious look to it.

Don't waste your time with Gundam Seed, it's shit and the worst series in the franchise. Well, to be honest the first series wasn't entierly terrible and was a semi-reworking of the orginal Gundam, but the follow-up Destiny was the worst turd of anything ever shat out by the animation studio that ended up raping and killing whatever little good there was in the Seed continuity to begin with.

You also don't want to watch Gundam Wing either, it's a retarded series where what essentially constitutes the Backstreet Boys getting their hands on giant robots, who then proceed to kill a fuckton of people all the while simultaneously screaming and crying about how much they hate killing and death and war and all bad things and how they love peace and flowers and butterfiles. And then they promptly proceed to kill even more people.

The newest Gundam is Gundam 00, which overall was pretty OK, even though the ball dropped slightly in the second season. Anyway, it's unsurprisingly the prettiest TV-Gundam to date and worth a watch if you like the franchise or giant robot porn. It also eschews the more traditional set-up of the series with putting the protagonists essentially in the position as the bad guys (omg tellolists!) of the series, which was somewhat refreshing.
I guess if you should sum the series up shortly you could call it a less retarded version of Gundam Wing.

There's still more, but I think I've wasted enough time typing this shit already.

This post bought to you by the best anime expert in Tribes who holds all the official TWL anime watching records. You may refer to me henceforth as "The | Anime-Elitist" because I'm just that much better than you when it comes to watching, judging, and knowing useless trivia about these stupid cartoons. Can someone suggest some recommendations when I finish off the short series (aka not Naruto / Bleach)

Also, Can someone give an opinion of these series, to see whether it's worth starting.

    Hunter X Hunter
    Blood+

    Is Manga better then anime?

Also other good recommendations for me! Thanks!
  • P.S. don't watch naruto you will thank me later :)

I'm too hooked onto this mediocre anime its unbelievable. Maybe cos its one of my first lol

Naruto is the new DBZ. Anime for little kids.
  • Haven't watched any Naruto. I like my series to have a coherent storyline with beginning and (at least something resembling an) end. Usually that means the series needs to be shorter. FMA was 51, 52 episodes and while I did watch that front to back, by the time I was nearing the end it was getting pretty stale. Same for Death Note (cat-and-mouse is cool and all, but in moderation).

@ the list of review requests

Elfen Lied is among my top three favorites (Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. being first and Haibane Renmei third). It's a fantastic story, but most certainly not for hemophobes. There's pretty much someone being ripped in half, with profuse amounts of high-pressure blood, at least once an episode. Hell the first seven minutes of the first episode are one giant (yet somehow awesome) blood-splosion. Definitely look into it if you won't be watching near people that would get freaked out by the splatter.

On subject of Ghost in the Shell, I wasn't too fond of the original movie (and I've heard that Innocence is a flop), but the Stand Alone Complex series is easily the best thing I've ever seen, and it was an English dub. Story, visuals, characters, if I did scores this would get 11s out of ten across the board. A must-see.

FLCL was a bit dense for me. Very short (think it was six episodes long), will probably take a few rewatches to "get" it.

Although the terrible, terrible ending is a slight turn-off, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a good series. I've been anxiously waiting for the Rebuild of Evangelion movies to release; the first one was simply amazing.
  • I recommend GundamWing.

I agree with you about Gundam Wing.
But i enjoy that kind of crap, it makes me lol.

You cant be the "best anime expert", its just sad.
I thought my title sucked...but that, that just takes the cookie.
  • So what?

    I just like Gundam Wing.

Lots of people suggest this / seed / OO and others I think, I've never heard of the gundam Anime-Elitist was talking about. I'll probably take his word for it as he probably knows what he's talking about.

So many good series out there I dunno what to pick first :O.

  • Runite, Dragonball Z is a very good anime, but I only suggest buying the episodes on DVD, that have been voiced by Ocean Group voice actors for English language. I'm not sure, if any such release is available, though. The only other versions are original Japanese and Funimation's English. Culturally, Japan is very different to America, and when I listened to Funimation's version of DBZ, it seemed to be of low-quality to me.
  • I just watched some episodes of 'Samurai Champloo' after 'Cowboy Beebop'. Also very recommendable!
  • I recommend GundamWing.

Im sorry but, that is just plain sad.

How can you watch TV better than someone? Unless you're obese, and you engulf the TV...
Who judges TV? You're supposed to enjoy viewing it, not judging it. :o

The T2 community has sunk since teh good ol days. :P

    Sounds good
    Anyone agree with this quote?
Will I love DBZ if I'm a naruto fan?

I watched the whole series of Cowboy Bebop. Sorry to say half the episodes bored me to death as half of the episodes are actually to get into the plot rather then 10 episode dedicated to a good arc for example. Don't really like standalone episodes either as it doesn't allow for much character development / plot development
  • everyone in this thread is watchlisted
