Hi all. This might be a lame question, but I figure it's better just asking outright than blundering into a server and being accosted for being an idiot there.

I used to play Tribes 2 all the damn time, but that was years and years ago by this point. It's been so long that I might as well be a fresh faced newbie right now - But when I discovered that Tribes Next had revitalized the game, I was excited. Tribes just feels better than most online games to me these days, and I'm hoping to get back into it. However, I'm not sure if the community is willing to accept someone of low skill and little talent into the limited population. I'd gather that the people still playing the game are high-skilled, and looking for intense, high-quality competition.

Is it worth it to try to get into Tribes Next now? Is it acceptable to try to learn how to play at this point, or would a flailing newbie just get banned on sight for shitting up the games (which I realize are few)? Thanks.

Yeah, join up, play on Goons. Just don't do anything awful (like steal your team's MPB and drive it off into the distance - that's about the only gameplay mistake that ever gets anyone kicked).

Here are the scripts I use:

Here are some stats:

When you're ready for pick-ups/competition you can get the mappacks here:

The important ones are:

http://tribes.m-parsons.com/maps/Packs/TWL2-MapPack.vl2

There's also a big tournament going on right now - it's too late to sign-up, but if you're interested the matches get casted and you can watch.

on goon haven, nobody would even be able to tell the difference between you and half the people who have been playing since 2001

unless you ask questions about how to play

Thanks for the links and the help, guys! I'll do my best to behave myself and make sure I'm aiming for the red triangles. And thanks for the links.

I'll probably avoid the tourney while it's in progress, or spectate. I'm a little ways off being able to even run the game for now anyway - I'm having serious difficulty getting the game running, but hopefully I can get it sorted and join up after I sort through the FAQ and can get these error messages figured out.

Don't be discouraged if you run into assholes in the game. Just have fun and ignore the trolls.

I'm pretty sure it's a software, rather than hardware, issue on my end. Sometimes running older games on a newer OS can be problematic, I realize, and Tribes 2 wasn't designed with Windows 7 x64 in mind. I'm not terribly surprised it won't launch. Cheesy On the other hand, I was able to at least get the game running on an OS X machine through wine, which I find unexpected! There are still some firewall problems with the OS X route, but hopefully those can get sorted if I dig a bit deeper.

It runs fine on my Windows 7 x64.  I do not think that is the issue, at least it isn't for me.

Strange. On my Win 7 machine, I keep getting bizarre errors about DLL files not being where they should be, even though I can clearly see those files do exist in the correct locations. I might start a thread in the support forum, since I don't see much in the FAQ about it.

Pretty dang good, all things considered. If I host a LAN game with bots, at least, I can play the game pretty smooth. The only problems with gameplay I've encountered stem from the fact that I'm trying this on a MacBook, and thus the keyboard is lacking significantly (Oh numpad, how I miss you). Getting Tribes through the firewall on OS X is a bit of a hassle, though. I can't see any servers, even with a Wine exception.
