  • I kinda thought this thread was going to be another complaint about the Goons server when I first saw the topic name.
  • Not related to goon?
    Dammit!

    False alarm people. False alarm.
    You can go home now.
  • Even though this is a thank you thread, and I don't think any number of thank you threads will effectively communicate how grateful we players are that TribesNext is bringing T2 back, I feel almost disappointed that this thread wasn't complaining about Goon Haven or any other idiot-overloaded server.
  • I don't get what the problem with Goon servers is? Honestly did you really expect everybody who joins T2 after the patch is out, that everybody is going to be mature and know how this game works right off the bat?? Be a mature person and ignore it, or if you can't, don't visit that server, there is no use complaining about it IF YOU STILL VISIT IT. If you do complain yet still go there and yell and scream about it, you aren't part of the relief, you are part of the problem.

    OOOOOooOoOoOOooo strikey!!!!

I'm hoping that eventually Goon Haven players will come to the realization that contributing to the team and team interaction is what tribes 2 is all about. It's only a matter of time, stay optimistic.
  • Goons is full of imature Tk'ers and nubz that toss mortars everywhere with No regard for their own teams deffences they just mortar spam all day long fucking up their own teams turrets and defences
  • Goons is full of imature Tk'ers and nubz that toss mortars everywhere with No regard for their own teams deffences they just mortar spam all day long fucking up their own teams turrets and defences

...Yeah. I can't tell you how many times I've been teamkilled by a mortar that would only damage me and nobody else, as there were no enemies for miles.
People also find it funny to ram me with hover bikes for lulz. I've died to more teamkills than to actual deaths from enemies.
Why team damage is on and continues to stay on is beyond my thinking.
  • I thought this was going to be about things I'd said on the goons server.
    =D
  • So can you guys tell the difference between a "goon" on Goon Haven and just a public player? I can't. Server is a public for anyone. The resurrection of Tribes 2 hasn't even been for a month and you're bitching about new players.

I keep getting ignored by some of you, but I'll keep asking: I'd like to know what I have done, as the Goon Haven owner and operator, that has offended or disgraced you. If you've been TK'd... welcome to a public server, what does that have to do with Goons? I have more admins now, those people are more likely to be kicked. I'd like to remind you that the only difference between a goon and anyone on this message board is that we read DIFFERENT INTERNET FORUMS.

I've spent my time and money on this server to make it the smoothest playing experience for all members of the Tribes community (which, for the nth time, I was a Tribes player long before being a "goon"). I have a 50-man ventrilo server that I'll be opening to the public when I host an upcoming tournament.

So please let me know where I'm the asshole for trying all I can to support the Tribes community and where any of you detractors have done anything OTHER than bitch about every little thing.
  • It's because your run a big, fat chaotic pub. Pubs have always sucked. People like to complain about them. It's nothing against goons or you. The problem is with the server, which as a popular 64 player, is unavoidable. Most goons who play on Goon Haven are either new to Tribes or they're an admin. Granted, most people who're new to tribes play on Goon Haven because, frankly, they can't handle the higher skill level of players on servers like branzone. I see a lot more goons that i know of on branzone and The Construct servers, anyway. This is coming from both a goon and a tribes vet, by the way.

I'm sure the majority of the tribes2 community appreciates your server and all the people it brings in. The T2 player base definitely wouldn't be where it is now if it weren't for the SA exposure.
  • I can completely understand that criticism, but the way that they address it is pretty lame. Also I offered a 32 man that rarely saw anyone join. Once (if) more documentation has been released for server management under the TribesNext modifications, my server(s) should yield a higher quality experience for people.

I'm proud that I'm able to contribute and give something back to the Tribes community. I still remember seeing Tribes 1 when it was a new release... walking up to it in Best Buy (confused that it said "Starsiege"... I'd loved Earthsiege)... and thinking I'd found the perfect game. Over 10 years later, here we are. It's pretty cool.
  • edited January 2009
The only people I have seen kicked were from failed votes. Some votes were to kick someone acting against the team. Votes against team damage are always denied as well.
64 is too cluttered to have team damage on. It's too hard to differentiate an accidental teamkill when on defense. However when on offense and no enemies around, it's blatantly obvious but when I spoke up nobody acted. Oh...I got warned, and the typical "don't walk into that mortar then" or "get used to it" by players I see play there on a frequent basis.
I have stopped connecting to the server since.
  • Every time I have turned team damage off, it gets voted back in by the players. The majority of the playerbase want it. It can't be that bad can it? I'm always in the thick of things and rarely ever get teamkilled. What you're talking about can happen on any server.

Now if you calmly asked an admin if team damage could be remove and you were warned... there's a place to complain about that. I'm sure you can find the thread quite easily. However I've never seen someone warned for casually asking a question.

Basically I don't think I can help you with this one. It sounds like you had one or two bad games and then stopped liking the server. Sorry. Maybe you'll like my other ones... or not. I'll just keep tweaking and asking people "How am I doing?" until there are no more players.
  • Once (if) more documentation has been released for server management under the TribesNext modifications, my server(s) should yield a higher quality experience for people.
What do you need help with?
  • I think td in a game like tribes is freaking retarded. In a combat sim like America's Army for example, where you have realism to a point, td should forced on in all cases. In a game where you have derms, jet packs, spin fusors, and butt lances, you're far outside the realm of reality. It's a game that knows it's a game, is supposed to be a game, unlike AA or other combat sims.
  • I for one thank you for putting up a server number one.Probably the most populated during all times of the day. first off its your server do want you want its ok to listen to opinions and way them but in the end you decide. I do understand the frustration of getting tked it happens when team damage is on its unavoidable I dont care if your a 9 year vet or just started yesterday you are gonna team kill because you can not control other peoples actions. Some asshats just enjoy it.
That being said I always thought it was best to have team damage off on public servers and leave it on for the comp servers .With TD off its alot more noob friendly.I just dont get the complaining about if you dont like it give him some suggestions dont bitch at him about it that wont help anything.
If you still dont like it here is an idea put up your own server and you deal with it. Sometimes running a server can be a thankless job thebeaz you can never please everybody so dont even try to.BTW do you have some type of forums so that people can get in touch with you for suggestions and such? keep up the good work.
  • My philosophy on Team Damage is that it forces you to pay attention to where you're shooting, especially discouraging blind firing or simply spamming something. The problem is this isn't a hitscan, bullet-centric game. Almost everything (save ELF, lance, and chaingun, probably few others) has a fair amount of splash damage to be dealt, which highly mitigates the skill benefit of TD. Especially when guarding a base. Considering everyone's weapon of choice has a high probability of having splash damage, any more than a couple people defending a small corridor is going to turn into a massive teamkilling event, and since the alternative is to have little defense, it's a tight spot.

I understand that there's a lot of splash damage going around, and considering I place very little value on my lifespan between spawns, I really don't care if anyone TKs me, as long as it's not intentional. Indeed, I tend to yell [VGS Sorry!] when TKed, because I'd rather my teammate not be penalized for hitting me with splash. If it's clearly intentional (i.e. the bastard TKs me right in front of me), I won't be so apologetic.

I wonder if every now and then we could disable Team Damage, maybe on a map by map review (certain maps being too small to allow high amounts of accidental TKing), just to see if it improves gameplay at all. But I think that decision would be best left to the admins present on the server, since votes are either shot down or pass with an immediate reinstating of TD anyway.

I love the Goon Haven server (contrary to my less-informed comments about it in earlier posts, of which I'm fairly ashamed), and pretty much never play anywhere else. Sure I sit out the odd match but at least I spend that time observing everything I can. Everybody here has their opinions, and are certainly willing to share it with everyone. Let's keep it civil, and if we must flame each other, just do it in game.
  • Yeah, I'm a bit puzzled too about the team damage thing since if anything a large server full of bad-behaving pubs and/or lot's of newbies is the place to have it off, but whenever there's been a vote call to disable team damage it never seems to pass - I somehow get the feeling that the 'hardcore' playerbase that is more prone for voting just keeps them from passing due to old habit or something.

Still, it would save people from shit like being backlanced by your own teammates when queuing up at the vpad or dying to mortar spam at home due to hyperactive defending heavies, even if it wouldn't stop stupid people blowing up your own assets with inconsiderate mortar spam.

Personally I don't see them "problem" with having TD off - there's only a few maps where it impacts gameplay in a really negative way, and those could always be dealt on a case-by-case basis by changing the maps to turn team damage on whenever they're run and off again when they end. People worrying about spam defences and whatever should first worry about what type of server they happen to be playing on first and foremost IMO.

I say it wouldn't hurt to at least try turning TD off for one day just to see how things play out.
  • I appreciate all the comments and suggestions guys. As the Tribes "resurrection" continues I'll try to add more dynamics to my server to make it more enjoyable (i.e. - Different evenings will feature different mission types, TD off during certain hours, etc). I'm glad people are starting to come around and realize that while this is a "Goon" server, it's not your typical "Goonsquad" full of griefers. We just want to play Tribes :)

Blindkilla, I have a thread on these forums and on the Something Awful forms specifically for comments/questions/suggestions/complaints. Feel free to post anything server related there. I'm working on servers in other games (TF2, Left4Dead, Blockland, etc) and as they come up (and stay up) I'll eventually open my webspace and maybe even have a "Goon Haven" related message board (though by that time Goon Haven will just be a name and not just for Goons).

I will clear up the "I got warned dillema". I was the admin who warned Flyingbox. I had read in the chat that he had been TK'ed, and I responded to him (In Chat), only to not get a response. He said he was TK'd again, by someone else and I asked if it was accidental and sitll no response. Everytime he complained about being teamkilled, I replied, but to get no response. After the nth time, I warned him for complaining and NOT giving me enough information to solve the problem. Just wanted to clear that up. Now, out of the admins we have on the server, I am probably the MOST reliable to theBeaz's server rules and I ONLY kick for things worthy, and I warn people when necessary, and here I did feel the need to warn you.
Please understand, Flyingbox, it's nothing against you or other players, I did my best to help you get rid of the TKing.

To my knowledge, most players enjoy my company on the server and I love to be there with them, trying to help everyone have a great place to play.

    :)

Well... with the possible exception of if you're kicking our asses. ;)

Since this was directly following my post, I feel as if I should reply to it (incase it was directed at me).

I'm glad you run your server. It is nice to have a place for new guys, and a place for vets to relax when they just want to have fun or do stupid things.

It sounds like you are addressing some of the problems with your server, but I'll quote myself from another thread:
I've had some fun on your server, but I'd suggest you get a few more admins (not me).

As there have been a few times when I played that 5 or 6 of the top 7 or 8 players have been on a single team (and it dropped your player count pretty fast).

An admin could even that out a little better.
I realize it is hard to find admins, and not a fun job (I used to be an admin on Last Gasp, and prior to that a few other servers), but it can really save the game sometimes.

You might also want to allow people to change teams (to make them uneven by numbers). There have been several times where, by chance, my team had the top five players in the game, I would have switched to help even things, but that would have made the numbers unbalanced.
  • keep even teams on is a good idea IMO .Why sometimes when even teams is off and one team is getting its butt kicked people will then switch to the winning team because they get tired of getting beat down.So in the long run it gets even worse sometimes one team dominate another it happens but as long as things switch up on the next map I dont see a problem with it.We tired it witn the HV server for awhile which held 60 plus people like Goon Haven did and it just became a pain in the ass teams would get so unbalanced like 40 vs. 20 sometimes and people would always start complaining and then admins would have to waste there time switching the people back to even things up.In the long run it just made the admins work harder and the games more uneven.
  • If people switch, everyone just leaves.

It may happen on occasion, but not usually. If it is a problem, allow the teams to be slightly uneven (like 2 or 3 players).
As for Team Damage, it is a must.

Sometimes it comes in handy, and it stops people from spamming (which keeps the game from being fun/skilled).
  • My chatlog showed otherwise. Else I'd respond.

Agreed and also team damage off creates additional problems like:

    1. The tank mortar, 3 HOF, satcheled flag defense.
    2. The carpet bombing, tank mortar, HO spamming flag carrier escort. This maneuver is designed to obliterate enemy chasers while leaving our flag carrier and escorts un-harmed.
    3. I've been tked alot by mortar turrets and friendly fire in general; I always apologise when I accidently hurt or kill a teammate. Lately I've been tempted to swap out the mortar turrets with AA or missile if my team has them up.
  • Saw a few things last night that ticked me off. One, I was sitting at the vehicle pad of this one map, can't remember the name, but its the one where turbogravs go straight up and out through a chimney to a red desert level. Anyway, I get my bomber and fly up and out and park it in front of the base, and start spamming for a bombadier and a tailgunner. I jump out of it and stand beside it to see if anyone is coming.

Then this ass comes out of nowhere and lands in my bomber and flies away, while I'm standing beside it. My keyboard just happened to die right that second or I would have let him have it.

The second was if you stay on the vehicle pad for more than two seconds they start spamming move please over and over and then they shoot your craft with a spinfusor or shocklance. All because they wanted to grab shrikes before anyone else. That pisses me off. Clearly the entire server was filled with noobs last night.

My question is, when you spawn a heavy vehicle and there is nowhere for it to go except out. Is it approriate to keep it at the pad until it is full and ready to go? Or should you take it outside and risk it so as to not hold up other vehicles from being spawned. Keep in mind that taking it outside exposes it to danger from enemy fire or being stolen, and completely wastes a perfectly good vehicle.
  • There was some map we played a night or two ago where the bases were very far apart and had two vpads each (not desert, was dark and icy). I kinda like that idea, since you could load up two Havocs at once, or just one and let the noobs grab their shrikes without TKing vehicles.

People need to have some patience when at the vpad. It's not Tribes 1 where the vehicle would spawn near-instantaneously. That animation sequence drags things out a bit, and beyond that the new vehicle generally needs to be loaded. At the same time, forming a line behind the vehicle sta is somewhat silly, as instead of waiting in line for a vehicle, you could be out actually helping the team fend off attackers.
