New Player issues

I have a new copy of tribes2 on CD and have downloaded both the full version and the patch (in that order) from the download section here.
On execution, of tribes 2 Online, there is a command prompt "start Tribes2.exe -online" and then a dialog box stating "C:\dynamix\Tribes2\Gamedata\tribes2.exe is not a valid win32 application."

Tribes2.exe is v 0.21570.0.0

I am running Windows XP Professional, Directx 10.

Before The patch, I would get a failure trying to access the authentication servers. (which I believe is expected, since they don't exist anymore.)

  • Just an update. I have reinstalled Tribes2 using the instructions listed here.
Installed the update tribes2_gsi.exe, Did not launch Tribes, applied patch tribesNext_rc1.exe.

Same error, "tribes2.exe is not a valid win32 application"
  • One problem I see here is that the newest build of T2 is 25034--21570 is like the oldest version out there. It might be that when you try to apply the TribesNext patch to v.21570, it breaks the tribes2 executable. You could try patching your version up to the latest one and see if that helps. The best thing I could find to accomplish this is: ftp://ftp1.sierra.com/pub/patches/pc/si_tribes2_update_21570-24834_25034.exe. This is a 21570 to 25034 patch from a section of the Sierra (the company that originally owned T2) website. Another option would be to download the latest version of the game here: http://downloadfile.editingarchive.com/view.php?ID=775. This is where I got my copy of T2, so I know for a fact that it works. I hope this helps!

Make sure you delete the Tribes2 directory between after uninstallations. Chances are the modified executable wasn't recognized by the Tribes 2 uninstaller.

So... uninstall it... delete the directory... reinstall using the GSI version. Then apply the patch.
  • I loaded an updated version of tribes2 from here: http://downloadfile.editingarchive.com/view.php?ID=775.

New version is .25034.0.0, old version (non functional) was v.21570.

Thanks. On to the next problem...
  • That's the same version we link to from the downloads page.
  • Just wanted to say that I've been having the same trouble as the original poster, trying to get the old cd version to work.

After patching it to the newest version and then trying to run the Tribesnext patch, the game apparently reverts to its older version and gives the same error. not a valid win 32 yadda
  • If you're using the original CD version, you must run the original patch before installing the TribesNext patch. There should be a few mirrors around, one is here:
